Healthcare at Oxford is primarily provided, free of charge at delivery, through the NHS (National Health Service). The college additionally has a nurse during working hours who can help you with smaller issues or advise you to the right place.

Any medical emergencies, please call 999. Any non-urgent matters can be directed to your GP or the College Nurse.

General Practitioner (GP) and College Nurse

The NHS GPs are primary care doctors who can see and screen you for many issues, as well as refer you to specialist services for more testing and treatment. The preferred GP practice at St Anne’s is Dr. Leavers and Partners in Jericho. Get set up right away with a GP practice when you get to Oxford so they can set up an initial visit, as they do get very busy when term starts.

Alternatively, you can also book an appointment with the College Nurse (for free) during term time. The College Nurse works closely with the College’s NHS GP practice and can see you for minor issues and advise you on where to go for other issues.

Dental

You’ll have to register separately with a dentist for dental care. There are NHS dentists who take on patients in Oxford, but this can be far and few in between. If you are looking for a general checkup, there are severable affordable private dental practices in town, which has better availability.

You can also use this website to find NHS & private dentists in Oxford.

Sexual Health

Sexual health is organized as a specialist service in the NHS; hence, your GP does not provide direct care. The Oxford Sexual Health Clinic is located at the Churchill Hospital in Headington, although most consultations and testing can be done online/at-home. You must come in for treatments and preventative care (i.e., PrEP). There are walk-in clinic hours every week, or you can book an in-person appointment (although these tend to have long wait times). Most services of the clinic can be registered online.

Hospitals

Unless you are a medical student, hopefully, you won’t have to find yourself here. Oxford has two main NHS hospitals, all located in the Headington/East Oxford area. The John Radcliffe (JR) Hospital is the main hospital of Oxford, while the Churchill Hospital is older and smaller, although it hosts some important clinics (e.g., sexual health).

For any medical emergencies, please call 999. Any non-urgent matters can be directed to your GP or the College Nurse.

Private options

For a (much) higher price, there are plenty of private specialist’ offices (dentist, dermatology, sports rehab, etc.) in the Oxford area. If you have a non-urgent, small/one-off condition that you would like to be seen by a specialist, they can usually be searched on Google and offer better availability.
