Sport and physical fitness are highly encouraged at Oxford, and the college provides many avenues in which you can practice your favourite sport as well as stay in shape. If you have any further questions on sports-related matters, please contact the MCR Sports Secretary, by emailing sports@st-annes-mcr.org.uk.

College Fitness

In September 2012, St Anne’s College re-opened its recently renovated Fitness Rooms in Trenaman House (58 Woodstock), the refurbishment of which was partially funded by the JCR and MCR. Open until 21.00 daily, to use the Fitness Rooms, you must first be inducted online. Sign-up information for the college gym is communicated via email every term and entails a small charge for the entire year.

Members of the MCR also have access to the joint St Anne’s/St John’s playing field The Fortress, located just off Woodstock Road (a five-minute bike ride north of the main college site) 215 Woodstock Rd, Oxford OX2 7AD. The Fortress has three hard tennis courts (and three grass courts for use in Trinity term), as well as pitches for football, rugby, and hockey pitches.

College Fitness Signup Information 2024-2025

To obtain College Gym access for the 2024-2025 Academic Year, please fill out this sign-up form. The yearly gym fees will be charged to your battles, and you will receive a confirmation email from the Porters when your gym access is activated on your Bod Card.

For booking Tennis Courts at the Fortress, you’ve got two options: using this Booking Form or you can email ashby.hope@sjc.ox.ac.uk. Before your time slot, you will have to come to St Anne’s Porters Lodge to pick up a Playing Field token to access the field and returning the token to the Lodge afterward.

University Fitness

MCR members are encouraged to use University Sports facilities, including the University Sports Centre on Iffley Road, which boasts a pool, standard outdoor track and indoor/outdoor lifting facilities. Block passes are at £60 for 13 uses of the swimming pool and/or gym. Yearly membership starts at £140 a year for gym and track facilities access, and £280 a year for additional swimming pool access and racquet courts booking (Squash, Badminton, Table Tennis, Fives).

The University Club on Mansfield Road also has a small sports center (open 24/7) for graduates and university staff. The complex also comprises a small canteen, bar, and shower facilities. It’s free to join the Club, but you will need to register online. Gym membership at the University club requires a yearly membership of £135 a year for graduates.

Private Gyms

There are several private fitness and leisure centres in Oxford and if you live in Summertown and want something closer to home, check out Ferry Leisure Centre. They offer two types of memberships: pay-as-you-go and monthly. You qualify for the discounted “student slice” price by showing your Bod Card. You can also hire badminton courts and basketball courts, and the centre has a decent swimming pool here.

Closer to the city center, there is Buzz Gym, which is located in the Westgate shopping mall and is open 24/7. Membership is £25/month for students, which gets you access to their huge gym space and all fitness/yoga classes.

College & University Sports Team

St Anne’s also offers numerous sports teams (with undergrads) and competition is often at the intercollegiate level. There are also university-level sports teams (i.e., Blues), which are typically higher-commitment, should you feel up to join. You may qualify for reimbursement of fees to join university-level clubs in Trinity Term. Applications are available then and the sports committee decides on the amount given based on various criteria.

Below is a list of St Anne’s sports teams and contacts – do check the official college website for more information on sport teams.
