“Their reasons or our reasons? Internal and external justification in the humanities debate.”

Sarah Bernhardt Hamlet

The last four years have seen intense debate about the value of the humanities, much of it in response to changes in higher education policy by the UK government. The justification and evaluation of humanities research in the period has been characterised by two quite different sets of evaluative terms, one concerned with the intrinsic quality of research and the other with its contribution to the public good. The talk will consider whether anything is missing from how we think about the humanities’ value.

Gabriel Roberts, of Worcester College, Oxford, is the Executive Editor of the Oxonian Review.
