Antonios Tzanakopoulos, “Cyprus negotiations: the legal issues”
This talk will discuss the current legal issues forming the background of the Cyprus negotiations under the aegis of the United Nations. It will focus in particular on the issues of amending or replacing the Treaties of Guarantee and Alliance that were concluded between Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom at the time of Cyprus’s independence. The stumbling blocks for all parties will be highlighted, along with possible solutions.
Antonios Tzanakopoulos is Associate Professor of Public International Law here at Oxford and fellow in Law at St Anne’s. He has worked as a researcher for the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens and New York, and for the UN International Law Commission in Geneva.
